ESM Project Coordinator Prof. Dr. Thomas Jung from the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) has been appointed as new member of the Scientific Council of the John von Neumann Institute for Computing for the period 2018 to 2020.

The John von Neumann Institute for Computing (NIC) provides supercomputer capacity for projects in science, research and industry in the fields of modelling and computer simulation. The Institute is a joint foundation of the three Helmholtz Centres Forschungszentrum Jülich, Deutsches Elektronensynchrotron DESY, and GSI Helmholtz-Zentrum für Schwerionenforschung and supports computational science in Germany and Europe.

The Scientific Council of the NIC advises the Board of Directors and NIC partners on issues relating to research and development, the continued enhancement of computer equipment and other resources for NIC. The Scientific Council consists of 12 to 15 members with diverse background and expertise who are specialists in NIC's research fields.

“I am delighted to join the NIC Scientific Council” says Prof. Jung “and look forward to working together with such an eminent group of experts to foster the development of computing infrastructure in support of physics and natural sciences, and to strengthen collaborations in Germany and beyond.”

Prof. Dr. Daniela Jacob, from the Climate Services Centre Germany (GERICS) in Hamburg and member of the ESM Steering Group, also serves on the NIC Scientific Council.
