Inspiring science and project progress presented at ESM General Assembly 2018

Over 80 participants attended EarthModel2018. Thanks all for your wonderful contribution!

The ESM General Assembly 2018 took place last week (12-14 September 2018) in Leipzig kindly hosted by UFZ and jointly organised by AWI and UFZ.

The meeting was attended by over 80 participants most of whom partners of the ESM project, but also representatives from other Helmholtz-funded projects (Digital Earth, MOSES) and an invited guest (Peter Bauer from ECMWF).

After side meetings on the 12 September afternoon, the general assembly was opened on Thursday 13 morning by UFZ Director Georg Teutsch who stressed the importance of developing high quality numerical models that can help understand and address the environmental challenge of our time.

The meeting featured two scientific sessions with a total of 16 talks, where project partners, mostly early career scientists, presented their research progress and latest results, and a technical session with two talks by members of the Jülich Supercomputing Centre who presented the JUWELS supercomputer and data storage capacity available for ESM experiments.

The general assembly included also two rounds of breakout sessions on cross-cutting themes such as coupling of model components, data and HPC, frontier simulations, outreach and communication and national strategy for Earth system modelling, where participants had the opportunity to discuss and provide concrete input.

We were also honoured with a visionary evening lecture by ECMWF Deputy Director of Research Peter Bauer, recently awarded with the Helmholtz International Fellowship 2018, who presented the ExtremeEarth project he coordinates.

Sixteen posters were also presented at the meeting and lively discussed during breaks and the evening reception.

All presentations and the full summary of the meeting will soon be made available on the project intranet.

We thank all participants to the meeting for making a wonderful contribution to the success of the project with special thanks to our guests and hosts and we look forward to seeing everyone again in Bremerhaven for our next general assembly, EarthModel2019!
