Shortly after the ESM project General Assembly in Leipzig, JUWELS, Germany's fastest supercomputer officially started its work on the 18 September 2018 at Forschungszentrum Jülich. Federal Research Minister Anja Karliczek and North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Armin Laschet, together with the Research Centre's Executive Board, symbolically commissioned the new "crown jewel" of the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), the first building block of a completely new modular supercomputer system. By 2025, the federal government and the state of NRW will have committed more than 145 million euros to the further development of supercomputing at Jülich's top international level.
JUWELS ("Jülich Wizard for European Leadership Science") is a modular supercomputer suitable for a wide range of applications, from computing-intensive simulations in climate research and the neurosciences to the evaluation of large amounts of data or artificial intelligence methods. It follows the Jülich supercomputer JUQUEEN, once the fastest supercomputer in Europe.
JUWELS will be instrumental for the ESM project as many of our experiments will be run on it.
