2nd ESM Coupling workshop held at DLR in Oberpfaffenhofen

Participants to the 2nd Coupling Workshop at DLR.

On 1st to 3rd April 2019 the second coupling workshop of the ESM project took place at DLR in Oberpfaffenhofen. Thirty participants from the ESM project and external guests discussed about the current status of the coupling activities of Earth system components within the project.

In twelve talks the scientists from different institutions presented recent achievements and current activities.  The topics presented included the new version of the ESM Tools, coupling of the chemistry climate model EMAC with the FESOM2 ocean model, coupling activities using OPENIFS, integration of ICON in TerrSysMP, recent developments in ICON-ART and ICON-CLM as well as the implementation of the OASIS3MCT coupler as MESSy submodel.

In addition to the scientific talks the agenda included many fruitful discussions about future directions with respect to the coupling different Earth System models or emerging hardware architectures such as GPU based systems. The discussion covered also topics such as the integration of solid earth dynamics in ESMs, input of biochemistry models for river models or interactions of ocean wave with currents.

More information on the discussion will be available soon in a status report. The presentations are available on the Teamsite (https://teamsites-extranet.dlr.de/pa/HGF-ESM/SitePages/Home.aspx) to all participants of the ESM project.
