Introduction to JUWELS: A workshop for ESM partners held in Jülich on the 4-5 July 2018

A total of 19 researchers from the various Helmholtz centres participating in the ESM project attended the introductory course on the JUWELS system in Jülich on the 4-5 July 2018.

On the 4th and 5th of July 2018 the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) organised the first "Introductory Course for users of the ESM partition on JUWELS”. The course was specifically tailored to the Earth System Modelling (ESM) community to give an introduction to the new Jülich Wizard for European Leadership Science (JUWELS) system.

The cluster module of JUWELS, the upcoming Tier-0/1 modular supercomputer, has currently being installed at JSC. Full information on the system can be found at: www.fz-juelich.de/ias/jsc/EN/Expertise/Supercomputers/JUWELS/JUWELS_node.html

Part of the system (the ESM-partition) is aimed at researchers working within the ESM project. The aim of this partition, which is already integrated in the cluster and comprises 500 of the 2,500 nodes overall, is to enable frontier simulations in the field of crucial societal relevance as well as the initialisation, tuning, and coupling of models. The allocation of CPU time from the additional partition is overseen by the ESM Steering Group.

A total of 19 participants from the different Helmholtz Centers took the opportunity to port and test their models on JUWELS.
